The Civil War was the first war in which news from the front was published within hours of its occurrence. The widespread use of the telegraph and the formation of news organizations such as the Associated Press allowed news from around the country to make its way to the hometown paper in time for the morning edition. As the drama of civil war unfolded hundreds of miles away, the average citizen could follow those events like never before. Such a war is bound to generate its share of unusual news items. Some of these items are certainly less than accurate, some contain a kernel of truth, and others relate some of the unbelievable things that happen during wartime. Here I've collected and categorized some of those items that, once read, make you stop and read them again.
